§ 22-8. Damage to trees.

  • (a)

    No person shall injure, mutilate, deface or intentionally vandalize any tree in a city street right-of-way or public place.

    (b)

    Suitable guards shall be placed around all nearby trees in or on any street right-of-way or public place so as to prevent breaking, debarking, or injury to any part of the tree or its root system during any above or below ground construction for paving, grading, building construction, or curbing, sidewalk and utility line installation.

    (c)

    No person shall allow any toxic chemical to seep, drain, or be emptied on or around any tree.

    (d)

    No person shall affix, attach, post or hang any sign, poster, banner or advertisement in any form to any tree in or on a city street right-of-way or public place.

    (e)

    In the event of any damage to a tree growing in or on any city street right-of-way or public place, a report of such damage shall be made to the commissioner of parks and recreation. Repair, removal or replanting necessitated by such damage shall be done by the department of parks and recreation, and the city of Syracuse may collect the expense of such repair, removal or replanting from the person or persons responsible for the damage.
